Despite the fact that the AR-15 stole the spotlight in the modern rifle arena, the AR-18, its quieter brother, was already paving the way for a new generation of firearms design with its ground-breaking features. The AR-18, never achieving either commercial success or widespread adoption, ended up setting the mechanical blueprint for those firearms that use a short-stroke gas piston system, have small dimensions, and are quite flexible in terms of design. Hence, what started as an abandoned project slowly but surely morphed into a blueprint for some of the most advanced rifles in service today. Below are six rifles that incorporate the DNA of the AR-18, indicating that the history of the so-called forgotten weapon might have left a legacy far beyond its sales.

1. SIG MCX Series
The SIG MCX is the history of the past that meets the future project. It combines the piston-driven durability of the AR-18 with the user-friendly design of the AR-15, resulting in a rifle that not only performs well but also offers a great shooting experience. It employs, however, a wide range of variation, both from the MCX Spear-the U.S. Army M7 adopted-to the ultra-compact Rattler. The versatility of the firearm makes it possible for the rifle to easily manage sound moderators, short barrels, and even full-auto firing, all the while, gas blowback is kept low, and the cooling of the action is possible. As a result, it has become highly popular with elite military and special operations units from all over the world.

2. CZ-805 Bren
The Czech-made Bren is equipped with the AR-18’s engineering ethos and advanced, modular design. The third version of the Bren is engineered to change its calibers and types of mission just by reconfiguration. This quality of being changeable is the main reason that the gun has been acquired by the Czech Army, the Hungarian military, and the GIGN, among others. While the Bren continues to present a sleek exterior, the same excellent piston-injected performance of the AR-18 is there underneath.

3. HK416
The HK416 is probably the first name that comes to mind when considering one rifle that best illustrates the AR-18’s lasting influence. The latter combined the controls of the AR-15 with the piston system of the AR-18 to offer a weapon that is known for precision, durability, and easy maintenance-even under extreme conditions.

This firearm has been chosen by special operations forces and has notably been accepted by the U.S. Marine Corps as the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Similar to the AR-18, the HK416 is also very good when used with suppressors and shorter barrels, thus carrying over the heritage of its original design to the present day warfare.

4. FN SCAR
FN SCAR is often referred to as one of the most adaptable firearms of the modern period. Being available both in 5.56 and 7.62, with rapidly changeable barrels as well as extensive modularity, the rifle can basically be customized to fit almost any task.

The carbine directly inherited from the AR-18 employs a piston system that allows the rifle to keep its action clean and cool during intense usage. This has helped it to be considered as a favorite by SOCOM, the Belgian armed forces, and the German GSG 9 (special police force). The fact of being able to change while still retaining reliability is the essence of AR-18 philosophy as represented by this rifle.

5. FN F2000
FN F2000 is one of those rifles that is very similar in terms of mechanism to the AR-18, but has a different layout because it is a bullpup firearm. This configuration led to the creation of a compact, futuristic carbine that, albeit short in length, does not sacrifice barrel length. The rifle has become extremely maneuverable because the action is located behind the trigger; thus, it is most likely to be used in close-quarters battle. Equipped with Ukrainian, Slovene, and Pakistani armies, it provides a perfect example of how the AR-18’s concept can be smoothly implemented in non-traditional designs.

6. Steyr AUG
The Steyr AUG, one of the first and most iconic rifles that utilized the AR-18’s piston system, was the model for all the later bullpup rifles with modern features. Although the gas system and bolt carrier were directly taken from the AR-18, the overall design was unique when it was first shown in the 1970s. Because of the combination of modularity, ruggedness, and instantly recognizable shape, the AUG came to be used not only by the military but also by the police for decades. Through continuous upgrades, it has managed to stay up to date with the latest trends even today.

Why the AR-18 Still Matters
Even at its debut, the AR-18’s short-stroke piston system was a fully-fledged innovation. Since it separated the hot gases from the bolt, it was more efficient, cleaner, and more reliable, especially in the configurations of short barrels or suppression folding stock option, and an easy way to field strip made it the perfect weapon for modern warfare.

While its sales were poor, the AR-18 was known as “the American AK” due to its practicality, robustness, and adaptability. Nowadays, if one digs deeper than the most prominent members of the AK-47 and AR-15 families, one will uncover bits and pieces of the AR-18 scattered throughout nearly every modern service rifle. The great irony is that the AR-18,-18 which was labeled as a failure, has been a silent but mighty force that’s been reshaping battlefields all over the world for more than fifty years.
