Ranking the World’s Most Expensive Defense Projects

It was always so that the power of the air was and still is the most expensive “weapon” of modern wars. Ground Forces dig deep in their pockets and spend astronomical sums on their air forces to get the speed, stealth, and supremacy in the sky triply. The historical lesson is quite a bit like a cliché: whoever has the air usually controls the battlefield. But the cars that make this possible are the most expensive technological objects in the world. Today’s best fighters cost as much as several ships, but the faction’s capabilities justify every dollar. The top 10 most expensive aircraft in the world go from the lowest of the elite to the absolute leader of the sky.

10. Shenyang FC-31/J-35 – $70 Million

The Gyrfalcon is one of the nicknames for this twin-engine stealth fighter, which was designed to be versatile, economical, and capable of operating from a carrier. Being equipped with internal weapon bays and having a radar-absorbing shape, it is supposed to be a land and sea fighter at the same time. It cost a little more than 70 million dollars, and it was the least expensive aircraft in the stealth world, yet it still represented a considerable step towards leading-edge aviation.

9. Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet – $73 Million

The Super Hornet has, for more than 20 years, been the carrier air wings’ central point. It is bigger and more powerful than the original Hornet, hence it can carry more weapons, more fuel, and has more range. The Super Hornet in both single and two-seat versions remains a dependable multirole fighter at about $73 million each, and the electronic warfare Growler variant adds more cost.

8. Saab JAS 39E/F Gripen – $85 Million

The Gripen of Sweden is a flyweight that packs a heavyweight punch. The E/F models are compact and very maneuverable with advancements in radar, increased payload, and top-tier electronic warfare systems. With about $85 million per plane and the lowest operating costs in its class, the Gripen is an appealing choice for countries that want performance at elite levels but don’t want to break their defense budgets.

7. Sukhoi Su-35 – $85 Million

The Su-35 is a heavily modernized relative of the Su-27 and is made for raw power only. Because of its thrust-vectoring engines and high-speed maneuverability, it is a nightmare for opponents in close combat. Although it’s not stealthy, it becomes a challenge to the enemy because of its speed and agility. Its cost is around $85 million, which makes it good for air forces that prioritize dogfighting over going invisible.

6. Boeing F-15EX Eagle II – $97 Million

The development of the legendary Eagle, the F-15EX, was designed to carry a maximum of 16 air-to-air missiles at once. Called a “missile truck”, it combines massive firepower with proven reliability. Its price has gone up to about $97 million, but with the potential to be upgraded for decades, it is made for the long term.

5. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II – $109 Million

The F-35 program is the most ambitious project of fighter jets ever. Produced in three versions-standard, carrier-based, and vertical takeoff aircraft offers stealth, sensor fusion, and unmatched data-sharing capabilities. The F-35B, the one for vertical landing, is the most expensive at about $109 million. Whether one is a fan of it or not, the Lightning II has become the center of allied air power worldwide.

4. J-20 – $110 Million

This long-range stealth plane has canard delta wings, internal storage for weapons, and engines intended for supersonic flight indefinitely. Recent improvements even suggest thrust vectoring for better maneuverability. It is one of the most advanced stealth fighters in service, at around $110 million per unit.

3. Eurofighter Typhoon – $117 Million

Only, without two post-experience was conceived, a four-nation collaboration-born twin-engine Typhoon that shows their great speed, agility, and weight/thrust ratio nearly one to one. It is very strong in air and attack roles, having Mach 2 capability, AESA radar, and infrared targeting. The cost of exports usually hovers around $117 million, showing that the Typhoon is the pillar of multiple European air forces.

2. Dassault Rafale – $125 Million

Rafale is one of the most versatile fighters ever made and as good as any in air superiority, precision strike, or even nuclear deterrence missions. Its Canard delta made it tough for the enemy as it was fast and agile, while its advanced self-defense suite made it hard to target it. Also, Rafale can do a carrier operation and supersonic flight. The price of about $125 million per unit is pretty steep, but it has been a favorite in major export deals.

1. Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor – $143 Million

Raptor is still the best fighter for the air superiority category and uses extreme silence (actually, it is said that it leaves a radar signature of marble size), thrust-vectoring for almost unmatchable agility, and supercruising at Mach 1.8. It was built at a cost of about $143 million each, although the calculated price considering research is about $350 million. The production was stopped after fewer than 200 of them were built, and strictly no exports were allowed, keeping it only in the US.

Dominance in the air doesn’t come from engineering brilliance alone—it demands extraordinary investment. From thrust-vectoring engines to advanced stealth shaping, these aircraft embody the pinnacle of modern military technology. In today’s world, the skies belong to the nations willing to pay the price for superiority.
